Cambridge 9 writing task 1 test 1

The best IELTS tips and advice from ex-examiners. Take a look!

Cambridge IELTS book 9 contains a great 'map' question. These questions are quite rare compared to questions containing graphs or charts, but you still need to be prepared for them.

You can see the question on this website, but I would write my essay in a slightly different way to the essay shown on the site.

Before doing the map question, have a look at this similar question and this essay. I think we can write the 'map' essay in the same way.

Below is an IELTS table model answer for writing task 1. The IELTS table below is taken from IELTS Cambridge book 7. The sample answer is estimated at band score 9. This page was last up-dated 2019.

The table illustrates the proportion of national expenditure in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey on three types of consumer items in 2002.

Overall, the category of consumer goods that all countries spent most on was food, drinks and tobacco, which was three times higher than on the other types of goods. The lowest spending could be seen in the category of leisure and education in all five countries. The outlay of Turkey was generally higher than the other four countries.

In terms of food, drinks and tobacco, Turkey spent the most at 32.14%. The expenditure of Ireland was also high (28.91%) compared to Sweden which spent the least (15.77%). Spain and Italy spent 18.80% and 16.36% respectively. On the other hand, the lowest expenditure was on leisure and education which accounted for under 5% in all countries. Turkey spent most on these items at just 4.35% of their national expenditure which is around double that of Spain (1.98%).

Clothing and footwear was the third category of consumer goods and outlays for those items were between 9% in Italy and 5.40% in Sweden.  The national spending in this area for the remaining countries averaged around 6.5%.

Tips for IELTS Tables

  • Put all your key features in the overview. Note one key feature is not enough for a high score.
  • Divide your body into paragraphs.
  • You don’t have to give all details. You can group details together by giving averages or ranges.
  • Be selective. Don’t put too many details in your report.
  • Make sure you write over 150 words but aim for less than 200.
  • Use a range of linking devices eg compared to / as opposed to / in terms of / while etc
  • Try to avoid being repetitive with your sentence structures.
  • Some words will be repeated. There is always a limit to how many synonyms one word has. As long as you show the skill or paraphrasing and avoid errors, it’s fine.

It is apparent that there has been a major improvements in infrastructure, new buildings and leisure activities are opened up to take the place of the trees. The alternation only focused on the center and the western while the eastern part has been left undeveloped.

The most perceptible change is the apperance of the hotel rooms. To the west of the island, 6 buildings, surrounding some trees have been constrcuted as well as 9 buildings in the centre. Between the 2 accommodation area, a reception building and a restaurant have been errected.

In addition, a prier by the southern coast, along with footpath and vehical track has been introduced, making it much easier for people to go around. The beach along the western coast remains relatively untouched but it does appear that it is now used for swimmning, also.

IELTS REPORT SAMPLE ANSWER

The two maps show the layout of an island before and after certain infrastructural developments.

In all, now, the island is oriented towards accepting tourists and accommodating their interests within itself. The developments include a footpath and a vehicle track. Moreover, a restaurant, a reception area, and a newly built pier along with several cottages have been built on the island.

Before these improvements, the island was untouched by humans. It had scattered vegetation around it, mostly consisting of coconut trees along the shoreline. A cliff surrounded majority of the island, however, a beach was also present on the tapered end of the island.

Later, with the inclusion of man-made structures, the island was made more inhabitable. Now, the island has a pier to dock sailboats, which further leads to the main reception. Down the road, one may find the restaurant. Few cottages lay astride the road, built to accommodate tourists. Finally, the beach is now tourist-friendly and has a dedicated swimming area. It is also notable that the built-up around the island has not harmed the local vegetation.
