Der Tag, an dem die Erde stillstand ist ein in Schwarzweiß gedrehter Science-Fiction-Film aus dem Jahr 1951. Der Film ist inspiriert durch die Erzählung Abschied vom Herrn von Harry Bates. Premiere des Films war am 18. November 1951 in New York City. In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland kam der Film am 2. Mai 1952, in Österreich im Mai 1953 in die Kinos. Zum ersten Mal im deutschen Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wurde er am 24. April 1971 in der ARD. Der Film zählt heute zu den Klassikern seines Genres.

Handlung[]

In Washington D. C. landet ein UFO und löst erst mal Panik unter den Einwohnern aus. Aus diesem Grund mobilisiert sich die Armee, um dem UFO zu begegnen.

Aus dem Raumschiff kommt später ein Mann im Raumanzug und ein nervöser Soldat schießt den Besucher an als dieser einen Gegenstand hervorholt. Ein riesiger Roboter taucht deshalb aus dem Raumschiff auf und reagiert auf den Angriff, indem er die Waffen der Armee mit seinem Laserstrahl vernichtet.

Ehe es zur Katastrophe kommen kann befiehlt der Außerirdische den Angriff einzustellen. Der menschengestaltige Außerirdische, der sich Klaatu nennt, bekommt ärztliche Behandlung. Dann offenbart Klaatu dem Sekretär des US-Präsidenten, dass er eine Botschaft an die Führer aller Nationen zu überbringen hat.

Allerdings sei dies laut Aussage des Sekretärs aus politischen Gründen unmöglich, was für Klaatu alles andere als verständlich ist. Klaatu gelingt es unbemerkt aus dem Krankenhaus zu fliehen und sich unter die Menschen zu mischen, die nun in erneuter Panik geraten.

Unter dem Decknamen Carpenter gelingt es Klaatu sich in einer Pension einzumieten und binnen kurzer Zeit freundet er sich mit der verwitweten Helen Benson und deren Sohn Bobby an.

Klaatu ist weiterhin entschlossen seine Botschaft zu überbringen und Bobby verhilft ihm zur Bekanntschaft mit dem Physiker Barnhardt, der entschlossen ist Klaatu zu helfen.

• Der Film wurde 1952 bei den Golden Globes als bester die Völkerverständigung fördernder Film ausgezeichnet und für die beste Filmmusik (Bernard Herrmann) nominiert.
• Der Tag, an dem die Erde stillstand wurde 1995 in das National Film Registry der USA aufgenommen, die Kopien erhaltenswerter Filme in der Library of Congress aufbewahrt.

Neuverfilmung[]

2008 erschien mit Der Tag, an dem die Erde stillstand ein Remake des Film, mit Keanu Reeves in der Hauptrolle.

Das Programm für die Kinowoche ab donnerstags wird jeweils am Montag­nachmittag veröffentlicht.

The Gentleness of the Message

After seeing the horrendous remake of this film, it made me go back to the original. This is a movie with a great message, and while it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, it has a human message. What makes it differ is that perhaps the response to power as significant as this first wave force may be tempered by a hesitation to destroy. Also, the aliens are benevolent and confident. Klatu is there to save the Earth and its people, not to make it a new central park for his future generations. Gort is an enforcer, but never acts unless provoked. It isn't that there is no cynicism in this film. Obviously, when threatened, the military types want to respond with carnage. Once it is established that this is of no use in a huge demonstration of power (done in the most "humanitarian" way. Michael Rennie has some personality, despite his bewilderment as a stranger in a strange land.. Patricia Neal is really caught in unfamiliar territory, but does a very good job in her role. This is an early treasure of the sci fi genre.
