We already showed you how to upgrade your Windows 7 computer to Windows 10, now let’s take a look at going through the upgrade on Windows 8.1. Windows 10 is now ready in 190 countries. If you reserved your copy, you should see a message to upgrade. If not, you can always download the Media Creation tool from Microsoft and install it or download the Windows 10 ISO for a clean install. We already showed you how to upgrade your Windows 7 computer to Windows 10; now, let’s look at going through the upgrade on Windows 8.1. Before starting the upgrade, make sure you have all of your important data backed up first. Or you might even want to make a system image and create a recovery key before the upgrade. The upgrade process is relatively simple, but there’s always a chance of something going awry. Even if you don’t see a message from the get windows 10 app on the taskbar, if the upgrade files have been downloaded to your PC, you can start the process via Windows Update. If you want to make any adjustments, you can do that later. It will also tell you about new apps like Groove Music, Movies & TV app, Microsoft Store, Photos, and the new Edge browser. And after that, you can log in with the Microsoft account credentials you used for Windows 8.1. Next, you’ll need to wait a bit while Microsoft sets up your apps and gets things ready for you. Summing UpWhen that’s done, you will be brought to your new Windows 10 desktop and can start checking out all of the cool new features like the new Start menu, Cortana, and Action Center. Also, keep in mind that there will be updates waiting for you. Windows 10 requires that you install updates automatically, so you will get them without thinking about it. But, if you want to make sure you have everything updated right away after the upgrade completes, go to Settings > Update & Security > Check for Updates. Da werden sicher noch ein großer Teil Firmen-Rechner dabei sein, gefühlt will kein Privatnutzer Windows 8.1. Allerdings gibt es noch einen praktischen Nutzen für das System.
Windows 8.1 kam 2013 als Gratis-Update auf den Markt. Es sollte ein Jahr nach Windows 8 dessen größte Mängel ausbügeln. Wie sich zeigte, lehnten viele Nutzer den neuen Startbildschirm von Windows 8 kategorisch ab, mit Windows 8.1 konnte man wieder direkt auf den Desktop starten. Auch der Startbutton kehrte zurück, das klassische Startmenü aber nicht. Auch Windows 8.1 hat das Ruder nicht rumreißen können. Klar gab es nicht nur Ablehnung, aber die Kombi aus Touch- und Desktop-OS kann man als gescheitert ansehen. Auch das Aus für Windows 7 hat Windows 8.1 keine zusätzlichen Nutzer beschert. Nutzer von Windows 8.1 sitzen aber nicht in der Falle, denn sie können auch kostenlos auf Windows 11 umsteigen – wenn auch über einen Umweg. So müssen Sie zuerst das kostenlose Upgrade von Windows 8.1 auf Windows 10 nutzen. In der Praxis gelingt das mit einem Tool wie Windows 10 Update Assistant oder Media Creation Tool. Vergessen Sie aber nicht, zuvor ein Backup zu machen! Danach führen Sie das kostenlose Update von Windows 10 zu Windows 11 durch.
Windows 8.1 wird noch mit Sicherheits-Updates versorgt und das ist gut so. Microsoft löst sein Support-Versprechen ein und unterstützt das System noch bis Anfang 2023. Unter dem Strich ist das aber viel Aufwand für fast nichts, denn die Nutzerzahlen gehen immer weiter runter – dass sich dieser Trend umkehrt, ist nicht zu erwarten. Wer noch auf Windows 8.1 unterwegs ist und umsteigen möchte, kann noch immer gratis auf Windows 10 wechseln und dann zu Windows 11. |
