Connect my samsung tv to my phone

Samsung phones used to be able to connect to a TV using an MHL cable You would plug one end in to your phone and the other in to the TV. This allowed users to mirror content from their phone screens on the larger display. For example, you could screenshare photos, videos and more on the TV just by using this cable.

When Samsung released their Galaxy S4, they also dropped support for the MHL cable. Fortunately, most newer versions of Samsung phones include Miracast technology built right in to them. This allows users to wirelessly mirror their phone’s content on a TV.

The TV itself needs the capability of receiving the wireless signal from your phone. A handful of newer TVs have this capability built-in. However, for most TVs you simply need to get a wireless display adapter.

What is a Wireless Display Adapter?

A wireless display adapter is a device that allows you to display the content from your mobile device on a TV. Sometimes you’ll see this device called a “wireless display receiver.” It “receives” the data signal from your mobile device and displays it on the TV.

The adapter is typically a small device that connects to your TV through an available HDMI port. It “pairs” with your mobile device using a technology like Miracast to beam your phone screen content to the TV screen.

Miracast is the wireless display technology that is built in to most newer Samsung phones. One example of a wireless display adapter that works with Miracast technology is ScreenBeam Mini2.

How to Set Up a Wireless Display Adapter

Each wireless display adapter may have a slightly different setup. Below we’ll describe the steps required to connect newer Samsung phones to a TV using the ScreenBeam Mini2 wireless display adapter. This particular device comes with a Receiver, a USB power cord, and a Quick Start Guide. To use this device, your TV will need to have an available HDMI port and an available USB port*.

  1. First, plug the small end of the USB cable into the wireless display adapter.
  2. Plug the adapter into an HDMI port on your TV.
  3. Next, connect the large end of the USB cable to a USB port* on your TV. This supplies power to the wireless display adapter.
  4. Turn on the TV and select the input source until you see “Ready to Connect.”
  5. On your Samsung phone, open the Wireless Display Application. This may be in your Settings. The name of this application may be different depending on which device you are using.
  6. Select ScreenBeam from the list of available Receivers.
  7. If prompted for a pin, enter the pin code that displays on your TV.

That’s it! You should be connected and ready to start mirroring your Samsung phone screen to your TV.

* If a USB port is not available on your TV, alternatively you can plug the power cord into an outlet using a spare power adapter.

  • SmartThings: Open the app. Select your TV. Choose More Options in the upper-right corner, and select Screen Mirroring (Smart View).
  • Chromecast: Connect the Chromecast. On Google Home, go to Add > Set up Device, and set up the Chromecast. Press Cast.
  • Wi-Fi Mirroring: Pull down Notifications on a Samsung phone. Tap Screen Mirroring, choose the TV, then enter the PIN on the TV.

This article explains how to connect a Samsung smartphone and a Samsung TV to see content from your phone to the TV with screen mirroring. Samsung's preferred way is the SmartThings app.

Before you get started, make sure your smartphone and TV are on the same wireless network, and be sure your TV is powered on and connected to your SmartThings account.

  1. Open the SmartThings app on your Samsung smartphone.

  2. From the Dashboard, select your TV.

  3. Select More Options (three dots) from the upper-right corner of the screen.

  4. Tap Mirror Screen (Smart View).

  5. You'll see your phone's contents on your TV screen.

Another way to view the contents of your Samsung phone on your Samsung TV is with screen casting via a Chromecast device and the Google Home app. To do this:

  1. Plug in the Chromecast device and power on the TV.

  2. Set the TV's input to HDMI.

  3. From the Google Home app, select Add > Set up Device, and then follow the prompts to set up your Chromecast.

  4. Select and open a Chromecast-compatible app on your phone and then tap the Cast button.

  5. Enjoy your casted content on your TV.

The Samsung Smart View app is another way to mirror content from your Samsung smartphone to your Samsung TV. As of October 2020, Samsung no longer supports this app, as it's focusing on the SmartThings app and ecosystem.

While new users can't download Smart View after October 2020, those who have the app can still use it to mirror their phone's screen to their TV. Optionally, use a casting dongle, such as Chromecast, with Smart View.

On some Samsung TVs, you may need to turn on screen mirroring by going to Source > Screen mirroring or Network > screen mirroring.

  1. Make sure your Samsung smartphone and Samsung Smart TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If you use a Chromecast, make sure it's connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Samsung smartphone.

  2. From your phone, drag down the Notifications bar to view the app shortcuts menu.

  3. Swipe to find and tap Smart View.

  4. Choose your Samsung TV. You'll see your Samsung smartphone's or tablet's screen appear on the TV.

If this is your first time setting up screen mirroring with Smart View, select Allow with the TV remote when the TV asks you to confirm the connection.

  5. When you're finished, tap Smart View on your phone to disconnect and stop mirroring.

If you have older Samsung devices that aren't supported by SmartThings or Smart View, it's still possible to mirror your phone's contents to your Samsung TV.

To get started, for some older models, press the Source button on the remote, then select Screen Mirroring. For other models, press Menu on the remote, then select Network > Screen Mirroring.

  1. Drag down the Notifications bar on the Samsung phone.

  2. Select Screen Mirroring (on some devices, select Quick Connect).

  3. Your device scans for available devices to connect to. Choose your TV from the list of available devices.

  4. If a PIN appears on the TV screen, enter the number into your smartphone when prompted.

  5. Once the connection is established, you can open most apps and programs from your Samsung smartphone, and the apps mirror to your Samsung Smart TV.
