Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. if their l.c.m. is 48. what is sum of the numbers?

Text Solution

Solution : Let two number are `2x` and `3x`. Then, their `LCM` will be `6x`.<br> `:. 6x = 48 => x = 8`<br> So, the numbers are `16` and `24`.<br> `:.` Sum of these two numbers ` = 16+24 = 40`<br>

1. Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. If their L.C.M. is 48. what is sum of the numbers?
A. 64B. 42
C. 28D. 40

Answer: Option D

Explanation:

Let the numbers be $2x$ and $3x$LCM of $2x$ and $3x$ $=6x~~$ (∵ LCM of 2 and 3 is 6. Hence LCM of $2x$ and $3x$ is $6x$)Given that LCM of $2x$ and $3x$ is 48=> $6x=48$=> $x=\dfrac{48}{6}=8$Sum of the numbers$=2x+3x\\=5x$

= 5 × 8 = 40

Formula for LCM = R1 x R2 x HCFNO1 = R1x HCF; No2 = R2x HCFHence you have to find out the value for HCFLet HCF is unknown factor xGiven LCM = 48, R1 = 2 and R2 = 348 = 2 *3* xx = 8 (HCF)

Sum of two numbers = 2 (8) + 3 (8) = 40
